The tempo of reggae is usually slower paced than both ska and rocksteady. One of the most easily recognizable elements is offbeat rhythms staccato chords played by a guitar or piano (or both) on the offbeats of the measure. Stylistically, reggae incorporates some of the musical elements of rhythm and blues, jazz, mento (a celebratory, rural folk form that served its largely rural audience as dance music and an alternative to the hymns and adapted chanteys of local church singing), calypso, and also draws influence from traditional African folk rhythms. The musician becomes the messenger, and as Rastafari see it, "the soldier and the musician are tools for change." Reggae music is an important means of transporting vital messages of Rastafari. Soon after the Rastafarian movement appeared, the international popularity of reggae music became associated with and increased the visibility of Rastafari and spread its gospel throughout the world. Reggae is deeply linked to Rastafari, an Afrocentric religion which developed in Jamaica in the 1930s, aiming at promoting pan-Africanism. The immediate origins of reggae were in ska and rocksteady from the latter, reggae took over the use of the bass as a percussion instrument. It is instantly recognizable from the counterpoint between the bass and drum downbeat and the offbeat rhythm section. Reggae usually relates news, social gossip, and political commentary. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues, and evolved out of the earlier genres ska and rocksteady. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, " Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to use the word "reggae", effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. Reggae ( / ˈ r ɛ ɡ eɪ/) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. With Lua scripting, provided the values you need have a static location instead of a dynamic one, you can make a pretty powerful script. I remember reading a Cheat Engine tutorial once about searching for a memory value that was referenced by a pointer and that just broke my mind. I'm actually a lot more comfortable using Lua scripting when available in an emulator. Still, one out of three is better than nothing, right? I wish I had the time to do the second and third games as well but their maps are so much bigger than this game (which still took me so long to fully capture) that I doubt I'll ever get to them. Over the years, I've become a lot more obsessed with accuracy and I prefer to stick only to what's actually present in game (with the occasional exception like Sonic 3D Blast where the isometric maps are so full of bad tiling and holes that I've elected to correct and/or fill in what's messed up or missing). Without my custom Lua script, I wouldn't have been able to accurately capture everything that's inacessible and I would have been forced to "fudge it" like in my first attempt. After playing around and doing some tests, it turned out that all three Sonic Advance games all feature very similar engines that are easy to exploit when it comes to moving the camera around and freezing all moving objects in their starting spots. A bit of reading online made me realize that Lua was incredibly similar to other programming languages I learned back in my IT courses in college. I honestly didn't think I would ever attempt this again but I changed my mind when I learned that the VisualBoy Advance-ReRecording emulator supported Lua scripting. This project, like a few others, was a long time coming since I ended up completely re-doing it in 2011-2012, which was several years after my incomplete first attempt (2004-2006). So to recognize the effort put into mapping this pivotal, portable adventure, TerraEsperZ's Sonic Advance (GBA) maps will be known as 's Maps Of The Month for February 2020. So perhaps a whole generation of gamers don't find it unusual, but near the start of the millennium, Sega's main mascot on a Nintendo machine was sort of a big deal. Brawl on the Wii, and also starting at about this time, Sonic competes against Mario in numerous games based on the Olympic Games. series as one of the first non-Nintendo characters (alongside Konami's Solid Snake) beginning with Super Smash Bros. This Sega mascot has appeared in numerous games on Nintendo's (and others') gaming devices since, even appearing in the Super Smash Bros. Who can possibly stop him? Well, the same hero that's stopped him for a little over a decade by this point, Sonic The Hedgehog! With his friends - Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose - and any Chaos Emeralds he can find along the way, he should have a chance to make it through numerous Zones, ranging from the Neo Green Hill Zone to Angel Island Zone and beyond.Ĭreated in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the first Sonic The Hedgehog game, Sonic Advance is also notable for being the very first Sonic game to be released on a Nintendo platform. For this month's "Maps Of The Month" featurette, I wish to draw your attention to TerraEsperZ's Sonic Advance (GBA) maps.Īs Sonic heads to the big screen this month, let's take a look at one of his small screen adventures.ĭoctor Eggman is once again causing trouble by "roboticizing" animals to build an army and threatening to take over the world. Where you'll see an improvement is with the noise cancellation (there's a transparency mode), which very well could be the best out right now. They also sound very similar to the QC 35 II, with no change to the drivers. It's arguably the most comfortable pair of headphones out there. (At 238 grams, the QC45 weighs just 3 grams more than the QC35, which should be imperceptible.) And while the Bose 700 have plenty of fans, a lot of people (including me) think this QuietComfort design is slightly more comfortable and the headphones fold up and fold flat. The Bose QuietComfort 45 essentially looks the same as its popular predecessor, the QuietComfort 35 II, with the biggest design difference being a USB-C port in place of the older Micro-USB. Also, the Earfun Air Pro 2 buds sound better, with richer, more dynamic sound. Active noise cancellation is the name of the game with these earbuds. However, while the Soundpeats T3 are better for calls, the Earfun Air Pro 2's noise-canceling and transparency modes are superior and the Soundpeats don't have the ear-detection sensor. Alas, there's no companion app that allows you to tweak the sound or upgrade the firmware.Įarfun talks up the Air Pro 2's voice calling capabilities - the buds have three microphones in each earbud - and I thought call performance was good but these didn't reduce background noise as much the new Soundpeats T3, which are also good for the money ( $40). It actually sounds pretty natural and is closer than I thought it would to the AirPods Pro's excellent transparency mode. There's also a transparency mode that lets ambient sound in. Equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, they're splash-proof with an IPX5 rating and offer up to seven hours of battery life on a single charge at moderate volume levels, though you'll probably get closer to six hours with noise canceling on. The earbuds have some extra features, like an ear-detection sensor (your music pauses when you take the buds out of your ears) and a case that has USB-C and wireless charging, that you don't often find at this price. They do sound better than the original Air Pro. Some of Earfun's buds have had a bit too much treble push - sometimes referred to as "presence boost" - but these mostly manage to avoid that. The Earfun Air Pro 2 not only features solid active noise cancellation but their sound is also impressive for their relatively modest price, with overall well-balanced sound, decent clarity and solid bass performance. We don't like to call them cheap headphones because "cheap" can have a negative connotation, but some of the top headphones on this list are relatively inexpensive and deliver excellent quality for what they cost. While many of the headphones and earbuds on the list are premium models that cost a lot of money, we also like to highlight headphones that are a good value. But this list takes the best headphones and earbuds from several categories, including wired headphones geared toward audiophiles, and distills it into a top overall headphones list. Some of those lists include best noise-canceling headphones and earbuds, best workout headphones, best headphones for running, best headphones for working from home and many more. Youp have probably heard about them before, or even have used them yourself. One of these options is using the Snapchat Geofilters. This makes it possible to advertise within the medium. Recently Snap Inc introduced the new ‘Snapchat Ads’. With 300+ million users, 190+ million active daily, it’s not strange that Snapchat is being used more often for event and festival marketing. Snapchat is still widely popular as a social media platform. In this article we’ll explain why you should use Snapchat geofilters, how Snapchat works and how you can start creating them yourself. This makes it an interesting tool for you to stand out. While the possibility has been around for a while, people are still not using it very often. So how do you make sure YOU are successful? A Snapchat Geofilter is like a fresh breath of air and basically indispensable for event marketing. It seems as if people have become immune. Events, festivals and business know the daily struggle of trying to stimulate their possible visitors and clients. Makes sense, because you’re probably not the only fish in your pond. And how it changed everything about how people play RPGs. Now, I recognize just how brilliant, elegant, and revolutionary the D&D 3E was. Now, I didn’t have the design chops that I have now – says the amateur, armchair game designer who has one minor credit and one dumb book to his name – I didn’t understand design then as I understand it now. And when the game came out, it was revolutionary. For example, back in the late 1990s – after I had been playing and running AD&D 2nd Edition for more than a decade – lots of people were pretty nervous about the death of TSR, the acquisition by Wizards of the Coast, and, most importantly, by what they were seeing of this scary, new upcoming 3rd Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. In fact, I used to be pretty damned supportive of what they did. The thing is, I ride D&D’s design team pretty hard. Let me start this rant off by being uncharacteristically charitable. But first, let’s talk about how they’ve evolved. Let’s talk about ability scores in D&D and in everything else and why they need to evolve. I need an easy article I can crap out without half trying right now. And how I’d handle things differently if I were making a role-playing game.įine. You wanted to hear me talk about how screwed up ability scores are in modern D&D. So, naturally, the consensus from the peanut gallery – that’s all of you – was that you really wanted that article. I made it part of my series about becoming a better GM. So much so that I didn’t even classify that article as a BS article. Well, thinking past.įunny thing is that I was actually pretty happy that the article I’d originally intended to write – ranting about ability scores and how I’d do them better if I were writing an RPG – I was happy that article got swallowed up by something that provided what I thought was actually useful advice. And that’s a frustration I’ve been dealing with for a while. Because the other issue with the beautiful, elegant, universal core mechanic underlying the d20 System is that its’ bogged down by a really crappy set of ability scores that no one seems to be able to think past. Originally, I wanted to rant and rave about ability scores in D&D. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I FREAKING SAID!Īt the end of that article, I admitted that the article I’d written wasn’t the article I sat down to write. Hell, it took a lot of discussion before anyone recognized that the things I was saying weren’t house rules, but part of the core approach of the game that was actually written in the rulebooks and then buried or overlooked. Which just goes to show how serious the problem actually is. And it also really broke a few brains, based on the comments. Remember that? If not, go back and check it out. Which is a problem because (a) handling things not spelled out in excruciating detail is precisely what RPGs have to do in order to open the open-ended, do-anything gameplay that makes them a better choice than a video game or board game, and (b) because the GMs and the books both therefore train the players to not think outside their skill lists. But it was also about how that nice, elegant rule got buried in all sorts of crap so it’s hard to see clearly and how many of the GMs I talk to have a sort of “skill check first” mentality when adjudicating actions which makes it harder for them to figure out how to handle anything not specifically defined in the books. The Open content displayed above has been reproduced with permission from the copyright holder.Last month, my ranty, pointless, rambling, pontificating BS article was about action adjudication in D&D and Pathfinder and how those games have this pretty good system for very easy action adjudication at their heart: the ability check, AKA the Core Mechanic, AKA the d20 System. One of these portraits appeared in the first Supreme Book, which was a magazine released mainly for the Japanese market. The New York actress and longtime friend of Supreme was shot by Shawn Mortensen wearing an oversized box logo tee tucked into a pair of denim hotpants. With this fresh crop of (often unsanctioned) celebrity endorsements, I thought I’d look back on the definitive list of stars Supreme has worked with over the years - some of whom have never made it onto actual garments. This can often throw up surprises, especially for its increasingly younger demographic, but it always keeps people guessing where Supreme is going next, and keeps the brand a step ahead of its contemporaries. However, the brand continues to only work with the people it is a genuine fan of. Nowadays, Supreme has the power to pretty much work with anyone, so it would be easy for it to cash-out and stick the current hottest celebrity in its logo. fashion, film, art and, of course, skateboarding. Public figures wearing the hallowed box logo is nothing new, however, and the downtown brand has itself worked alongside some of its favorite individuals from the worlds of music, sport. This can, of course, lead to mixed results, with Moss receiving universal praise, and Jenner universal distaste, from the ever-vocal Supreme community, especially when counterfeit products are involved ( sorry, Maisie Williams). Again, these properties is how it is defined, and makes no claim of the nature of f(x) in any statement. For this to be the case, I then am able to derive r. There is no mention of g(x) in the MVT statement, this is how we define g(x) by definition, which will satisfy the property irrelevant of f(x). Of course, I don't know r, and so can add an arbitrary condition on g(x) such that I can now choose an r. I define some arbitrary function, g(x), such that g(x)=f(x)-rxįor r. The idea is I have my functions f(x) which I can not make any definitions on besides the original statement, otherwise would not be general. Whether or not it is well defined is a different topic. We have not yet stated its purpose, this is how we DEFINE g(x) and r, and yet not limit f(x) in any way. Remember, we have said no property of r, there is not said one thing of r in the statement. What we are trying to prove is that there is a c in between interval such that f'(c)=(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a). Hint: you can't use c in your proof because that's what you need to prove. By choosing r in the way you do to "satisfy" Rolle's theorem, that is, f(a)-ra=f(b)-rb, you are in fact using the very c you set out to prove exists. Assuming a property in a matter that f'(c)=(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a) would be circular, since I am considering f(x) to be a general function, so this couldn't just be a definition, but would adding a specific property I never proved, of f(x). Assuming any property we want from it is not circular, as long as it is a well defined property. We define g(x) to be this function such that g(a) = g(b), and r is arbitrary, we have not made a statement yet of its purpose beforehand.
